Learn to use WordPress, it is so easy and simple to use that in a matter of minutes you can create a professional looking website that is also search engine friendly.
In this 3 part series I want to help you learn to use WordPress. I hope to also help you learn how to get traffic to you blog, build a list of subscribers, and monetize your blog as well as some more cool stuff.
Very simple and easy to do however, you will need to have cPanel access with your hosting account. Hostgator is probably the best and most inexpensive place to get a hosting account and a great place to have your hosting once you learn to use WordPress.
Some of the reasons I have used Hostgator for so many years is their tech support is open 24/7 and they are very helpful. I have always been pleased with the help and support I have received from them. Another reason is their cPanel is very user friendly and I can host several domains on one hosting account and that saves a lot of money in hosting costs.
To get to your cPanel just type in your address like this:
“YourDomain.com/cpanel” and that will take you to your log in screen for your cpanel.
Once you log in to your cPanel scroll down the page and you will see a section with the label, Software/Services, in that section look for an icon that says Fantastico. Click on that icon then on the left side of the menu click “WordPress” and follow the step-by-step instructions. Once you have completed the installation of WordPress be sure to have the settings emailed to you, then save that email in a folder in your email account.
Choosing Your Theme
There are countless themes available for free. You could spend hours just browsing through themes. Here are a few places where you can find themes available for your new blog.
When you have decided on a theme you would like to use download that theme. I would suggest you create a folder just for WordPress themes and save your theme into that folder. That will make it easier to find when you are ready to install it to your blog.
Next you want to install your theme to your blog. Finding your blog admin area is easy just type this into your browsers URL address window:
Next just enter your admin username and password, you created these when you installed WordPress on your hosting account inside Fantastico.
Once you are in the admin area click on “Appearance” on the left and then click on “Add New Themes”. Next click on “upload” then click “browse”, find the zip file of the theme you downloaded and click “install now”, then click “activate” and that will switch the default theme to your new theme.
See how easy that was to set up?
Some Basic Settings
You certainly want to make sure your blog will get indexed by the big search engines also very easy to do. Click on “settings” in the admin area, click on “privacy”, select “I would like my blog to be visible to everyone”.
Next you want to change your “permalinks”. These are the things that will help you get traffic from the search engines.
Click on “settings” then click on “permalinks”, next click on “custom structure” and put this in the field: /%postname/
